Character
A massage name associated with Bali, Indonesia, including contemporary spa services. Official Indonesian tourism material documents varied massage, oil and herbal offerings; different providers do not necessarily follow one identical technique system. [1]
History & heritage
The selected official tourism sources connect contemporary Balinese spas with local care traditions, but are not historical investigations. They cannot establish a precise ancient date, one founder or an unchanged standard sequence across centuries. [2]
Boreh and loloh: names for preparations
I Nyoman Arsana’s 2019 study of Taru Pramana texts in the Leiden University Library distinguishes several preparation names. It describes boreh as finely ground ingredients mixed with liquid, and loloh as a liquid preparation that is drunk. These words therefore identify preparations, rather than massage movements. The study examined transcribed texts and traditional knowledge; it did not test a spa treatment or establish that today’s products share one recipe. [5]
Usada texts: copies and readings
Arsana identifies typed transcriptions dated 1940 and 1995 among the Taru Pramana records he studied. Those are dates of particular copies, not the origin dates of Balinese massage. In a separate 2018 study, I Wayan Suardiana compared three Usada Cukil Daki texts and documented copying errors when Balinese script was rendered in Latin letters. Such work shows why a named text and version matter when describing traditional care. Correcting a reading does not itself establish a remedy’s clinical effectiveness. [5] [6]
Techniques
Services may combine manual massage with oils or herbal materials. Official descriptions also list scrubs, wraps, baths and other treatments; these should be identified separately rather than presented as necessary steps in every Balinese massage. [1]
Discuss product ingredients, allergies and skin tolerance beforehand; plant-derived products are not automatically non-irritating. Tell the practitioner about relevant health conditions, and stop and report pain or discomfort. Massage should not replace or delay medical assessment of persistent symptoms. [3] [4]
Evidence and limitations
Tourism material documents practice and cultural association, not clinical efficacy. The sources checked for this entry do not provide sufficient specific clinical evidence to promise disease treatment, detoxification or weight loss from Balinese massage. General massage research does not automatically validate a particular spa package. [1] [3]
