Character
Touch involving a parent or primary caregiver and attention to the baby's responses. It should be distinguished from vigorous adult massage, pediatric tuina and hospital care for preterm infants. [1]
History & heritage
The International Association of Infant Massage describes Vimala McClure combining practices encountered in India with other methods to develop parent education, with a book published in 1978. This is one modern program's history, not the origin of infant touch worldwide. [2]
Techniques
Classes may introduce gentle touch, responses to infant cues and caregiver–baby interaction. This entry gives no pressure, stretching or disease-treatment routine; stop when a baby is uncomfortable or unreceptive. [1]
Do not massage a baby who is unwell or has open wounds. Preterm infants and babies with additional needs require appropriate clinical assessment and individual guidance on products and practical methods. [4] [5]
Evidence and limitations
A Cochrane review of typically developing infants under six months found evidence too weak to establish routine health benefits. Its page is dated 2022, but searches ended in June 2011; it is not a review of evidence through 2022. [3]
A separate review of healthy term newborns
A separate 2022 review searched through November 2021 and included 31 randomized or quasi-randomized trials involving 3,860 healthy term newborns. It compared whole-body massage, with or without oil, with no massage, starting in the neonatal period. Low-certainty evidence suggested a possible increase in body length at the end of treatment; effects on weight, sleep and neurodevelopment remained uncertain. These findings do not establish benefits for premature, low-birthweight or ill newborns. [6]

Two dates on the Cochrane page
The Cochrane page by Bennett, Underdown and Barlow displays a publication date of 1 April 2022, while its search methods end in June 2011. Both dates matter when reading that review. IAIM’s parent FAQ describes its teaching programme; it is a different kind of source from a review of trials. The evidence section identifies the population and limits of the research it discusses.
