Character
Rhythmic pressure and assisted stretching, usually received in loose clothing. [1]
History & heritage
Nuad Thai continues through families, communities and teacher–apprentice learning and joined UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. A separate inscription concerns the Epigraphic Archives of Wat Pho: UNESCO dates these religious and secular inscriptions to 1831–1841 and lists their Memory of the World registration in 2011. These records illuminate preservation and transmission; they do not certify medical efficacy or establish one origin date. [1] [3]
Techniques
Practitioners apply pressure with palms, thumbs and forearms, and guide stretches. Sequences and intensity vary by school and individual needs. [1]
General massage literature reports rare serious injuries, including nerve injury and fractures; these are not Thai-massage-specific risk estimates. Health status, pressure and stretching range require individual assessment, and pain should not be endured. Discuss uncertain suitability with a health professional; massage must not delay evaluation of symptoms. [2]
Evidence and limitations
A 2017 randomized comparison assigned 120 outpatients with nonspecific low-back pain to Thai massage or joint-mobilization programmes. After four weeks, pain and disability scores fell in both groups without a significant between-group difference. There was no untreated or sham group, and the programmes included heat and exercise. Improvement therefore cannot be attributed to massage techniques alone, nor used to establish lasting benefit or suitability for every patient. [4]

Heritage records and a clinical comparison
The embassy account and UNESCO’s Wat Pho record support the historical discussion; neither is a report of clinical trial results. Juntakarn and colleagues’ 2017 paper reports a comparison of Thai massage and joint-mobilization programmes. Follow the history and evidence links separately: recognition of heritage and the results of that particular comparison answer different questions. [1] [3] [4]
